Project Description

Country: Nepal

Location: Kathmandu

Total Budget: $2,800

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water, sanitation and hygiene, Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy, Community economic development

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Provide scholarships for two students in Kathmandu, Nepal.

The mission of the Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. Consistent with the mission, the Rotary Club of Whitefish will provide scholarships and partial living expenses for two students living in Nepal for 12 months. A former resident of our town moved to Nepal years ago and recently offered up two students to our club for consideration of educational support. One is a 24 year old woman wishing to earn a Master's degree in Environmental Science. With additional education, she hopes to better address critical issues such as clean water in a desperately poor nation. The parents of the other student, in elementary school, hope he will achieve a good education to break the family's multi-generational cycle of poverty. The club's International Committee met the students during a recent video call and enthusiastically endorsed support for their educations. These students are akin to the starfish parable. While we can't help every student needing support, Rotary can help these two students. Just like the boy that tossed one starfish back into the ocean and remarked, "I made a difference to that one!"

Club members will receive monthly reports regarding studies and full details as to finances. The International Committee will carefully review these reports and conduct video calls with the students to discuss educational progress and finances.

The costs are noted in the budget and reflect the net required support. The woman will work part-time while attending school, while the younger student's father is an apprentice tailor and will devote 10% of his monthly income.
