Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Kalispell

Total Budget: $15,500

Area of Focus: Maternal and child health

Activity Type: Community Development: Construction/Renovation

Summary: Our project will address deferred maintenance and landscaping needs of Flathead Youth Home. Rotary Clubs of Kalispell, Daybreak and Evergreen, youth and staff, and licensed contractors will complete the work, benefiting 80 youth per year.

The Flathead Youth Home (FYH) has been serving at-risk youth in western Montana since 1997. The current facility was built in Kalispell 10 years ago with strong community support (including Daybreak Rotary). The eight-bed group home is dually licensed to provide short-term crisis intervention and longer-term group care for youth ages 10 to 18. Since the "new" home opened its doors in May 2009, FYH has provided a safe and healthy home for more than 750 teens and adolescents dealing with the serious trauma, mental health, and chemical dependency issues that stem from childhood abuse, neglect, and growing up in poverty.

Naturally, a decade of high activity and occupation levels caused significant wear and tear on carpeting, flooring, counter tops, painted surfaces and outdoor landscaping. This project will address many of these accumulated maintenance and landscaping needs, and ensure a comfortable and welcoming home environment for the next hundreds of youth in crisis who will turn to FYH for support.

Specifically, this project will remove and replace worn living and bedroom carpeting, and install LVP (luxury vinyl plank) flooring in high traffic areas. Damaged window blinds and counter tops will be replaced and improved lighting in the dining room will be purchased and installed. While licensed contractors will be required for many of these tasks, Rotary volunteers and FYH youth will assist as able (ex: removal of old flooring) to reduce costs. Rotary volunteers will also help with interior and exterior painting, landscaping, refinishing furniture, and planting trees outside along the boulevard and in the orchard that Rotary volunteers helped plant in 2014.

The Rotary Clubs of Kalispell, Evergreen, and Kalispell Daybreak are excited to join forces in this project. We plan to begin 7/1/2019 and expect to complete our work by 11/30/2019.
