Project Description

Country: Nepal

Location: Kathmandu, Nepal

Total Budget: $5,000

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

Activity Type: Water: Sanitation

Summary: We will collaborate with the Tripureswor Rotary Club (Nepal) to build gender specific latrines for a school near Kathmandu, Nepal.

In 2015, Nepal experienced two earthquakes that caused extensive damage in several parts of the country. One area was to the northwest of Kathmandu where the Bhavani Secondary School in Kagatei Gaon lost its latrine and water supply. Other projects were prioritized for reconstruction and the school hasn't had a latrine or water since that time. Bozeman Sunrise Rotary is partnering with the Tripureswor Rotary of Kathmandu to develop a Global Grant initiative to address literacy in 6 schools including the Bhavani Secondary School, but we propose to first use a District Grant and our match to rebuild two latrines for male and female students and staff and to bring water to the school. Having a latrine and running water is critical for the health of all the students as human waste is currently dispersed across fields adjacent to the school and there is no accommodation for washing hands or having drinking water. We plan to partner with the Tripureswor Rotary club to coordinate the logistics of, and participate in the construction of the latrine facility and water pipe line. We would like to send funds to Nepal through the Tripureswor club mid-summer. This would allow them to arrange for supplies and a contractor following the summer monsoon. One or more members of the Sunrise Rotary club will visit the site in late fall to participate in the construction and planning of our Global Grant. Our goal for this District Grant is to address this basic human need so that students can focus on their studies.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

Our in-country transportation would be hired mini-vans or land rover type vehicles. The Tripureshwor Club would help in this arrangement. We will recognize Rotary with an engraved metal plaque at the school.
