Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Apache Junction

Total Budget: $2,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: After school program for at-risk Jr. High School students to improve behavior and academic scores in the classroom

The M.E.S.A. Program was established in 2007, and is an early intervention strategy between Mesa Public Schools, the Mesa Police Department, and local community members and businesses. The focus of the program is junior high school students who have shown the need for positive behavioral redirection, enhanced school grades, and improved relationships with family, school staff and community members. A successful student graduates the program, the weekly academic review shows improved grades and a desire to continue to learn and go onto graduate high school. During the past two years one of the M.E.S.A Program students graduated as the honor graduate of the program, came back to mentor the next year and she is now a Police Explorer and junior staff member in the current M.E.S.A. class. Her high school GPA is now 3.4 and she is on the Varsity Basketball Team at Westwood High School in Mesa, Arizona. The project needs funding to support supplies and food for the program. Funding is also use to pay for the etiquette dinner after each graduation and or others supplies as needed. Members of the Mesa Sunrise Rotary Club are instructors for the program
