Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Arlington, Texas

Total Budget: $9,500

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Provide Software, Books,Official Practice Tests Classroom material for New 2014 GED Testing

This project meets a critical need facing Arlington Reads, a leading Adult Literacy program in Arlington. The Adult Literacy Component of Arlington Reads evolved, in significant part, from the initiative of two Rotary Clubs in 2009. It became wholly operated by Arlington Reads in 2011. It is one of the community based, or faith based adult literacy programs in Tarrant County that supplement the classed provided by Fort Worth ISD and Tarrant County College. Tarrant Literacy Coalition reports that these community classes carry over 40% of the load of serving the adults seeking GED and increased literacy skill.

The continued operation of this highly successful program is being challenged by a totally new national GED Test beginning January 1, 2014. The new program will be entirely computer based nationwide. The change will outdate much of the text and workbook inventory which has been used from 2001 to the present. Tarrant Literacy Coalition has indicated that some of the existing community based GED classes are planning to discontinue their operation beyond 2013 because of the magnitude of the changes, and the costs of changing to the new requirements.

Arlington Reads is a high profile regional Adult Literacy program that intends to continue to serve the City and the County adults. This grant will provide a major supply of essential startup software, text books, and Official Practice Tests used in the GED curriculum beginning 1-1-14. With this grant, Rotary will supply the following purchases: Online GED Preparation Software-$6000 for up to 125 students; New Print materials consisting of 20 classroom sets of the workbook and study book for all four subjects, plus extra math study and workbooks - $3500, and 75 full batteries of Official Practice Tests for the new curriculum - $1500. (See documents).

As this is written, the publishers are still finalizing their materials The costs included have been provided as best estimates by the three sources of materials referenced in the Documents section. Orders will not be issued until the publications are finally firm - probably in late September, or early October. The materials will be required in the Literacy House for installation and training by November 30, 2013. The Literacy House is a home structure contributed for use to the Rotary literacy program, and transferred to Arlington Reads, by First United Methodist Church of Arlington, with operating costs underwritten by Arlington Rotary.
