In collaboration with the Dollywood Foundation and Yukon Literacy Network the project has been providing books monthly to all children born in the territory, we would like to expand the program to include all children born in the city of Whitehorse as well. The project has been in place for five years and while there has not been a robust assessment of the project, ad-hoc comments and test results from the schools located in the smaller communities in the territory have indicated that the project is having a positive impact on the literacy and school preparedness of the children in those communities.
This is an on-going project that the Rendez-vous Rotary Club would like to see expanded and continued. To that end, we recently signed an agreement with the Yukon Government that would provide the club with matching funds of up to $50,000 annually.
Rotary members participate in a variety of ways on the project. Three Rotarians are on the Advisory Board, the entire club participates in fund-raising efforts such as hosting a Pancake Breakfast, annual BarBQs, and one of our signature events, the annual Lobster dinner to name a few.
