The intent of this project is to provide support to impoverished Lusaka, Africa women who are serving as caregivers to children (mostly AIDS/HIV orphans) in the Kuunika Lutheran Community School and elsewhere. Details will be available after Bink Cook and Ellen Casey (both are members of San Diego Rotary Club) return from their pending trip to Lusaka. The project likely will center on providing microcredit loans, enabling the women caregiver/entrepreneurs to start small businesses. Small loans (about $50 each) will benefit 150 - 200 women, or about of 750 - 1000 individuals, including family members. A nongovernmental organization (NGO) in Lusaka with experience in microcredit programs has been identified.
This project addresses economic and community development, and will help the participants identify and learn to run a business, generate income for their families, bolster their self-esteem, and contribute positively to the community as a whole.
Several 5340 district clubs will collaborate on this project through MRM (Mobilizing Rotary for Microcredit). The Kusinta Rotary Club in Lusaka will also be involved.
