Every day, 25,000 people die from hunger and hunger related causes. Malnourishment weakens the immune system and makes individuals unable to recover from even the most common illnesses. We, as Rotarians from Placentia, California, will work in partnership with the "Stop the Hunger" foundation to package over 20,000 meals containing nutritious , dehydrated meals of rice, soy, vegetables, flavorings and 21 essential vitamins and minerals. The meals are designed to meet the daily needs of children suffering from severe malnourishment These meals are then easily transported to crisis-burdened areas or supplied to school feeding programs around the world. The meals cost only $.25 per meal to create and will contain six meals per package.
Rotary volunteers including our families and friends and Interact members from the three high schools located in the Placentia area will package 100% of the project food that will comprise our 20,000 meals. Utilizing one of the gymnasiums or cafeterias of these high schools, along with the 70 volunteers from these groups, we anticipate the packaging of the meals to take approximately 6 hours and will be completing activity on the first Saturday in November. We also intend to work with the Media Arts Department at El Dorado High School to document our event as well as publicize it through local media. School involvement in conjunction with a Rotarian endeavor will raise awareness, not only to the need for this type of humanitarian effort but of Rotary as well.
Our goal is to use our pledge of $2722 from our club along with the requested matching grant of the same amount. This total of $5422 will enable us to supply 21,776 meals to those children in need.
