Summary: Reading books will be provided to low income children in Title 1 schools in San Diego Unified School District.
Research indicates that children learn to read from grades Kindergarten through 3rd (9 years old); after that school curriculum is designed for children to read to learn. Children whose reading skills are not up to grade level by 3rd grade will struggle through the rest of their academic career. One way to improve reading skills is to read aloud to children at school and at home. Providing children with sturdy, colorful reading books at their level of reading and allowing them to take them home and read them to their parents and siblings has proven to make a difference in reading ability and in reading scores on state testing. Our club will provide third graders with reading books for them to keep. They will receive them from a Rotarian who will read aloud to them and then present them with the book.
