Summary: This project will pay for the printing of 1,000 text books for Nepali children in rural areas of this country.
This project, which has been in development for three years, involves the development of a culture and curriculum specific textbook for use in the rural areas of Nepal as well as the printing of about 3,000 such textbooks. Currently, nearly all Nepali in rural areas cannot read and there is no instructional textbook in the Nepali language. In contrast with other third world countries that may access internet resources, no such capability exists (or is likely to exist for some period of time). Textbooks will remain the means of instruction. They will be illustrated and would be printed in Nepal (about $3.00 USD per textbook). The books will go to rural schools with the means to take care of them and use them. Most of these schools currently have no books whatsoever. Distribution would be through the HHN and the Alaska-based 503(c) entity, which maintains a presence in this country.
Rotary is involved in this project in several ways, and Helping Hand for Nepal (HHN) is a partner on this Rotary project. (HHN and AER have had a close working relationship on a variety of projects, most recently the purchase of an autoclave for a hospital in Nepal -- a Rotary project funded by an international grant.) HHN works directly with Rato Bangala School (RBS) in Kathmandu —a Nepali private school— to develop these textbooks in the Nepali language and to illustrate these books. An HHN Advisory Board Member, Santosh Gyawali, is a member of the Rotary Club of Kathmandu Metro. Santosh has previously been involved in school selection and book distribution for schools along with the Directors of RBS and HHN. Both Santosh and Jay Jackson, a member of AER and Director of HHN, will participate in this project. Ms Jackson goes to Nepal for 6-8 weeks every year to volunteer and work on humanitarian projects, and this project will be one of these. There will be a gifting ceremony with Rotary members present. An article and photo will be given to the Nepali press regarding this Rotary project. Ms Jackson will submit the same to the Anchorage Daily News. (Note: in the autoclave project, the American Ambassador to Nepal was present at the gifting ceremony for that project.)

This is a project update dated 3/16/15. Substantial progress as been made in implementing this project. A book in the Nepali language has been written and illustrated, a publisher has been found that will print the books at a discounted cost, and its printing is scheduled shortly. Total funds were secured only in mid-January, so much has been accomplished in a short time. The total amount was $4000--$3000 from Rotary and HHN, and $1000 from CARTA (Central Alaska Retired Teachers Asso.) and HHN. The book and development and publishing is being overseen by Rato Bangala School/Foundation.
