Summary: Six laptops provided for Organization helping Autistic Children
It is important to raise awareness about autism and to provide necessary assistance to children and families affected by autism.
Through this grant, Sunshine NY Rotary aims to provide 6 laptops for use by children with autism to help their developmental growth. The laptops will be provided to the Autism Society Habilitation Organization (ASHO), a 501(c)(3) non-profit agency that provides assistance to individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families. ASHO works to create a safe space in the community for the South Asian and IDD/ASD population. The Organization has already served over 200 families scattered all over the state/city during the last couple of years. All of their programs are designed to keep the IDD community engaged and free from depression and anxiety.
Specifically, ASHO offers basic Computer and English courses to children with Intellectual/Developmental disabilities and other sensory disabilities, including Spectrum (ASD). They hold two sessions per year and can accommodate up to 20 participants per session at their rented venue for in-person training. However, due to the practical nature of the Computer course, one laptop per participant is a necessity. The children range in age from 7 to 15 years. A couple of them are above 15, due to developmental situations. Unfortunately, they do not have enough laptops, which makes it difficult for the children with special needs to share.
By making six laptops available, more children will be able to be trained and learn better.. The laptops will remain with ASHO to be reused in ongoing training. The laptops will be branded with Rotary Club of Sunshine logos affixed to each of them.
