Availability of clean drinking water is a big problem in many cities of Pakistan. Jhang Saddar is a city of 1.5 million inhabitants. Its water contains high degree of salt at levels considered dangerous to drink according to WHO (World Health Organization). In addition, the underground water, the only source of water, has been further contaminated due to a faulty sewage system and extensive use of pesticides and herbicides in the rural areas.
Installation of filtration plant (which uses green sand filter, micro filters, activated carbon column followed with UV treatment) will produce 3,000 liters of drinkable water per hour. The purified water stored in tanks for delivery will benefit 35,000 - 40,000 residents in the area. Door-to-door delivery of drinking water will be implemented (through a donkey cart system).
Project Timeline: Estimated time to completion of plant will be around 9-10 months following the availability of funds.
Sustaining Support: RC Jhang has already installed 11 water filtration plants at various locations within the city, which are working successfully. Members of Rotary Club Jhang inaugurated the latest plant on 8 June 2011. A full time technical employee visits these plants on a fortnight basis to perform maintenance tasks. A Rotarian living in close proximity of the plant is responsible for supervision of operation of the plant, at his/her convenience. In addition, RC Jhang also has retained a honorary water consultant, a technocrat, Mr. Rana Mohd Sadiq, rendering technical help. The club also involves individual(s) from the community being benefited to look after the proper functioning of the plant. The cost of sustaining support is borne by RC Jhang.
