Summary: Mult-year, multi-phase project to install water gather/store/filter (G/S/F) Systems and Hand-Washing Sanitation Stations at 44 rural school areas in Meru, Kenya. 24 rural area school systems were completed in phase 1 of this project.
The O'Neill Rotary Club has committed a club cash contribution of $1,000 in support of the continuation of Global Grant #1412820 through completion of phases 2 & 3. This multi-phase global grant project currently exists as a partnership between the Rotary Club of Meru, Kenya and the Scottsbluff-Gering Rotary Club of District 5440. Upon completion of the third phase of this global grant in 2015-2016, rural rainwater collection systems, patented Bio-Sand filtrations systems, and hand wash stations will have been installed at sixty-eight rural area schools located in Meru, Kenya. These systems are sanctioned by Engineers Without Borders and require no electricity, no replacement parts, and no maintenance. All materials are locally sourced, and most all the labor is provided by local men and women whose children will benefit from this Clean Water and Basic Sanitation Project.

We finally received the funding from the Rotary Foundation and are starting Phase 2 of this Project in Meru, Kenya.
Phase 1 installed Clean Water Filter and Storage Systems and Taught Basic Sanitation to 22 rural schools serving over 7500 students and teachers.
Phase 2 will install systems in at least 24 rural schools serving over 8000 students and teachers.
One of our Partners, PEAK and the Colorado Partners (Debbie Welden and Rich Fisher and their Group), returned from Meru and provided a summary report of their visit. We are fortunate to have excellent “feet-on-the-ground” partners (the Methodist Church of Kenya), PEAK who travel to Meru in January each year, as well as the Meru Rotary Club, to stay in contact with the Schools and assure the sustainability of this Project.
