Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Hailey Idaho

Total Budget: $7,500

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Community Development: Volunteer Services

Summary: This grant would provide partial funding for the Rotarun ski school program called LASAR (Learn to Alpine Ski and Race).

The Rotarun Ski Area was created with the help of many community volunteers. Hailey Rotary Club and members were instrumental in developing the ski hill to its current condition. The name is a recognition of the efforts that Rotary brought to the development of this community resource. Two Hailey Rotary Club members currently sit on the Board of Rotarun and the club membership has donated many hours of volunteer service to Rotarun. Most recently many club members and community volunteers rebuilt the snow fences that had been destroyed in the Beaver Creek fire last summer.

One of the needs that was identified was for a lower cost option for local children to learn to ski and be active in the winter time. The cost of Sun Valley ski passes is beyond the means of many in the community. Rotarun provides an affordable opportunity to engage youth and families in healthy outdoor activities in the winter time.

The LASAR program is an 8 week ski school that meets twice a week for children between 5 and 11 years old. There are two classes each week that include exercise training, nutrition advice, instruction of skiing skills, instruction of ski racing technique and tactics, practice running gates, obstacle courses and terrain park, video sessions for feed back, agility and balance work and most importantly - a lot of fun!

The school typically has between sixty and seventy-five kids enrolled. Last year there were over 100 hours of volunteer coaching time. The Rotarun Board President said that the cost of the LASAR program is approximately $10,000. This includes preparing the hill, running snow cats and the lifts, lighting and insurance. The Hailey Rotary Board has approved a $2,500 contribution to Rotarun to support the LASAR program. Rotarun will provide the additional $2500 to match the Hailey Rotary Club donation. The ski school will be fully funded with a District grant of $5000.

This project fits the Rotary Foundation Mission statement by improving health through promoting physical activity and educating children in healthy lifestyle alternatives.
