The Road to College Program was developed to reach students earlier in their educational careers, and begins involving them during junior high school. The Road to College Program works with families and students encouraging them to think about and plan for post-secondary education. It is a rigorous six week program that promotes a culture of high expectations and the importance of post secondary education. The program will take place over a six week period and students will receive instruction in Reading, Writing, Math, Supportive Guidance and Physical Activity.
Up to this point, this effort is supported in part by Zavala, WFISD, Vernon College and Café con Leche. However, The Road to College Program for summer 2015 requires additional funding in the amount of $3,000.00.
In the past two years, the Zavala and Café con Leche collaboration has served over 500 families and 450 students through 20 community Cafés at the following venues:
• 2 at the Wichita Falls Public Library
• 3 at local churches
• 12 at public schools in Wichita Falls ISD
• 1 at Vernon College
• 2 at homes of local families
Through Cafés in the public schools, 80 Hispanic seniors were helped with filing for financial aid. Currently, 73% of these students are attending post-secondary institutions. Testimony for Café's success is reflected in the 94% parental approval of the program (via event evaluations).
Research demonstrates that economically disadvantaged students lose gains made through the scholastic year during the summer months due to lack of exposure to academic enrichment activities. With this in mind, Zavala and Café are requesting funding to support the extension of the The Road to College Program for summer 2015. The structure of the program consists of four segments: Academic Enrichment, Supported Guidance, Nutrition, and Fitness. If granted, the $3,000.00 will partially cover the costs of a six-week summer program including wages, educational field trips, materials and meals.
