The Santee-Lakeside Food Bank was forced to relocate this year due to the Church who provided space selling the property they were on. They are now on a temporary site that has less space. As a result of less space, they do not have an adequate storage for bulk items needing temperature control and processing, nor, does the site have the electrical power to power a refrigerated container, which is ultimately what they need. Currently, the Food Bank is renting a non-issulated container for $200 a month, which impacts a very tight budget. The Food Bank intends to move to a permanent site down the road.
The Santee-Lakeside Rotary Club would like to purchase an insulated container that can later be retrofitted as a refrigeration container once on a new site (with proper electrical capability) has been secured. By purchasing an insulated container, less food spoilage will occur and it will also free up $200 a month for purchase of supplemental food items that can round out receipient's diet.
Traditionally, the Food Bank served approximately 1800 people each month. They are currently at 1400 (575 families) due to the limited storage capacity. This number can climb with the use of an insulated container and even more so when the container can be retrofitted to a refrigeration unit. One can only imagine how fast food can spoil in a non-insulated and/or refrigerator unit when outside temperatures can rise to 100+ degrees during the summer months. The same would be true when temperatures reach freezing temperatures. the Santee-Lakeside Rotary Club wants to assist the Food Bank in reaching as many deserving clients as possible. This grant will help with that effort.
