Project Description

Country: Philippines

Location: Island of Luzon

Total Budget: $6,000

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water and sanitation

Activity Type: Health: Disease

Summary: Medical Mission to the Philippines, this year 3 medical sites in the island of Luzon. This project address the need for Health, Disease Prevention and Treatment of the low-income, underprivelege ,impoverished areas of Luzon, Philippines.

This project addresses the need for health, disease prevention and treatment of low income, under-privileged, impoverished areas of Luzon, Philippines. Three medical sites were identified through research, contact with Rotarians in the area, and communication with the local health professionals. Also, follow up by local treatment teams if needed. Along with the medical mission is an assessment for sanitation and the need for clean water. These are the areas where clean water is still not available and accessible due to lack of access to pipe water. Access to affordable health and diseases treatment, and preventative medicine are also difficult to obtain. These are the places where children and older adults are undernourished, some of them just have stumps of teeth remaining in their mouths due to lack of dental hygiene and no dental treatment. Some of the elderly are hunch back and so crippled by arthritis and other painful ailments. They went through their lives tolerating pain when pain medications could have eased their sufferings. The medical mission is composed of Rotarians, health professionals and other volunteer members of the rotary that pay their own expenses to be able to render this humanitarian service. The medical mission offers free medical consultation, free prescription medication, and other offerings such as vitamins, free dental services, free dental hygiene materials, free minor surgeries, free eye exams, and reading glasses. Also, free health and nutrition education is available to them. The mission stays one full day at the medical site, working from dawn to dusk before moving on to the next medical site. Approximately 1,000 or more patients at each site line up to get services. Every year approximately 8,000 to 10,000 people benefit from the medical mission of RCSDPV. The club has an annual fund raiser particularly just for the medical mission. The number of sites are determined by the amount raised from these fund raisers and the Matching Grant. Almost half to 3/4 of the members participate and volunteer their services to this cause. Last year there were 34 volunteers. The missions are staffed by volunteers, from MD's nurses, etc. to crowd control and runners. Runners are volunteers that run instruments from one area to another. We also had volunteers that held the dental patients head while the dentist try to extract their teeth. Our dentist improvise and just use regular plastic chairs in the absence of dental chairs. Counting the time of travel, the mission usually last 2 weeks. Last year we helped build an Artisian Well in one of the sites that has the most difficulties in getting clean water for the citizens and the local elementary school. Most schools in impoverished areas have no running water. With this grant we will be able to continue helping the less fortunate people of the Philippines.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

The project was completed on March 10,2015. The medical Mission this year 2015 consisted of three medical camps; Umingan, Pangasinan, collaborated with the local Rotary and the Mayor of the town. 1,207 patients were seen and given free medications, medical consultations, minor surgeries, dental and optical services rendered by volunteer doctors, nurses and other health professionals. The 2nd medical camp was in Zambales, Philippines where 760.00 patients were seen. 150 dictioanaries were distributed to an elementary school there. The last medical camp was in the island of Mindoro, in a remote area mostly populated by the primitive Mangyan tribe and the Paradise Valley club was hosted by the local Rotary Club of Mindoro Oriental. 720 patients were seen there and left over medications were given to the local clinics of the Barangays. The Artesian Well project was also build there. It is partially completed, just waiting for the water source to be piped in. 150 dictionaries will also be distributed there as well. The treasurer and chair of the medical mission is preparing the financial report to complete this report. Photos will follow.
