Summary: Renovate Oak Hall Classroom at the Fullerton Arboretum

Fullerton Arboretum Oak Hall Classroom Renovation

The Fullerton Arboretum provides many educational opportunities for North Orange County schools. Local history is brought alive with docent conducted tours of the 1893 Victorian house - an experience over 2,000 elementary school kids have each year. Science and Nature is very hands on as part of the Environmental Education Curriculum, which is a learning module integrated with the 3rd grade lesson plan - an experience over 1500 kids have each year. There are numerous other educational opportunities available at the Arboretum.

The Oak Hall Classroom and meeting space is a key part in the delivery, planning and organization of many of the educational activities and it is in dire need of a renovation. The original building housing the classroom was donated after the 1984 Olympics and is in need of an update.

This room is used for both children and adult programming and needs to be updated to reflect the mission of sustainability by being both energy efficient and meet current classroom standards on the campus. The room is 30' x 40' with 8' ceilings. Here is a brief outline of what the project could entail:

• Remove existing carpet. Fold and tack at entrances to hallway.

• Install two sliding panel windows in east wall. No windows exist currently so the openings would also need to be framed (we can assist with this labor if needed). Estimate for material $750.00

• Wash, patch and paint 4 walls. Estimate for material $350.00

• Install either sheet or tile vinyl flooring and baseboard. Estimate for material $3,000

• Replace ceiling lighting with LED fixtures. Estimate $2,000. (The CSUF campus where the Arboretum resides, is in the process of upgrading much of it lighting to LED, so this fits in nicely with their sustainable effort to lower electricity costs.)

• Replace ceiling tiles as needed - Estimate $100

• Contingency $800

• Total $7,000

Club members will be involved in all aspects of the project. Hands on to remove existing carpet, prep the floor, repair and prep walls, paint walls, frame and install new windows, install new ceiling tiles. Some "professional" help will be needed with the electrical, window and flooring install.

Rotary will be recognized with information on the vibrant Arboretum website, and email blasts to members and subscribers. In addition, an appropriate plaque will be installed on completion recognizing Rotary for their contribution. This project will also involve the Friends of the Fullerton Arboretum, which numbers over 1500 members and over 300 very active volunteers. Discussion and project updates will be reviewed at board meetings for the Friends of the Fullerton Arboretum. We will also be working with the Orange County Register which has a very close relationship with the Arboretum devoting many articles to activities at eh Arboretum.
