Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Dana Point, CA

Total Budget: $3,000

Area of Focus: Economic and community development

Activity Type: Community Development: Volunteer Services

Summary: Provision of food through the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, feeding needy families in Dana Point, the 5th Marines and immediate surrounding areas.

Provision of food through the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, feeding needy families in Dana Point and immediate surrounding areas. This is a Community project. We calculate that the funds we provide, enables us to feed the equivalent of 300 families for the year. This Food bank is now officially recognized as an EFAP agency - Emergency Food Assistance program.

We obtain 5,000 pounds of fresh fruit, vegetables, and dry goods directly to the communities where low-income individuals in Dan Point live. Members of MBSR will collaborate directly. There are 6 schools involved in the program. MBSR Rotarians volunteer will help pack food into bags for each family, ensuring a balanced diet. We have identified that many families are short of food during the week and on the weekends. Fresh produce are especially important to help insure that kids and parents receive proper nourishment.

There are 2 high schools,2 middle schools and 2 Elementary schools involved in the program. There are also 5th Marines Regiment families. The students and families that will receive food are chosen by the Principal and the school social counselor based on need, MBSR will collaborate by having direct contact with the Principal and counselors. The following schools will be the beneficiaries Dana Point Hills High School, Niguel Hills Middle School, Aliso Niguel High School, Marco Forster Middle School, HR Dana Elementary and Kinishota Elementary plus the fifth Marines Regiment.

We expect to have 100% active participation of our club members.

The members of MBSR reserve the food truck for two dates during the year. These dates are set between Monday-Saturday for the food distribution. MBSR members will help register and identify the families coming to obtain the food. MBSR members will pack and give bags with fresh food for the families in the community of Dana Point.

The food distribution takes between 2-4 hours. MBSR members will come to the desire location and will assist and participate during the whole process. The project is a" hand on "and requires active Rotary participation. It gives our members the opportunity to get involved with the community and gets our name out to the public.
