Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Wasilla, AK

Total Budget: $6,000

Area of Focus: Economic and community development

Activity Type: Food/Agriculture: General

Summary: Retrofitting the Food4Kids' delivery van with shelving to hold food pans serving over 400 meals for delivery to kids in the Matsu Borough, Alaska.

Since Food4Kids' launched they have connected kids struggling with hunger with more than 160,000 additional meals. They feed more kids every day, making sure they have the food they need to learn and grow. Food4Kids' continues to advocate for breakthrough policy changes to feed more children; and finding new ways to reach kids with meals all year round everywhere across the MatSu Borough.

Food4Kids has been providing quality, healthy meals to sites across the MatSu. Because not all children can access an established "urban" meal site - Food4Kids' go to them. Each weekday they load up more than 400 meals for delivery to community sites where their partners are making meals available to valley kids. The existing cargo space allows them to safely transport 8-9 prepared food bins which only serves 8 sites. The current process is challenging and limited due to the lack of "contained" storage during transport. This is inefficient and eats up their budget in travel when it could be used to make more meals.

The addition of 2 food grade shelving carts to each of the delivery vans, designed to transport food bins will allow them to safely transport more than 24 prepared site bins at one time. This product will be secured to the flooring of the delivery vans increasing the ability to provide meals to outreaching communities year round.

Our investment in retrofitting the delivery van with shelving which holds food pans will allow them to safely transport more meals for delivery allowing them to add more locations feeding more hungry kids.

Wasilla Rotary will hold their annual Rotary Uncorked on October 3, 2015 and will raise funds to match a District Grant. Once the funds are raised we will then give the Food4Kids' a check allowing them to get the delivery van retrofitted with shelving. We also intend on helping them with their program by volunteering time in their program.
