PROJECT TITLE:

1. PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Note: The project cannot be started until the District 5340 Grants Committee approves this application. In the project description, please make sure you answer the following questions:

How does this project address one of the six areas of focus that correspond to The Rotary Foundation's mission of (1) peace and conflict prevention/resolution, (2) disease prevention and treatment, (3) water and sanitation, (4) maternal and child health, (5) basic education and literacy and (6) economic and community development?

How will this project meet the specific need and who specifically (e.g. how many) are its beneficiaries? Will this project provide specific skills and/or knowledge that will allow the beneficiaries to help themselves in the future?

How will the Project Sponsoring Rotary Club, other Rotary Clubs and organizations work together to implement this project? How many Rotarians will participate in the project and in what roles?

The goal of the Dictionary Project is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn, so The Rotary Club of El Cajon gives dictionaries each year to children in the third grade.

The El Cajon Rotary Club will focus on third grade students in the Cajon Valley Union School District and the Mountain Empire Union School District. Cajon Valley USD has 8 Title 1 elementary schools and Mountain Empire USD has two. El Cajon Rotary purchases books for 3rd graders in all 19 of the CVUSD elementary schools and both schools in the Mountain Empire USD. We are seeking matching grant funds only for the 10 Title 1 schools.
