Total Budget: $1,250

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Economic and community development

Activity Type: Food/Agriculture: General

Summary: Processing and packaging of meat donated to the St John's Food Pantry, Valentine, Nebraska

The St John's Food Pantry serves the Valentine, Nebraska community and surrounding area. In 2014, the Food Pantry served over 1,000 adults and over 500 children. In addition to canned and dry goods, the pantry provides its clients with some meat products.

Each year, the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, located near Valentine, Nebraska, donates to the St John's Food Pantry meat from 6-9 elk from its herd. The elk are culled from the Refuge herd for the purposes of herd management and full medical testing. The Valentine Rotary Club is requesting $1,000 to help pay for the processing and packaging of the donated elk meat. The club will contribute at least $250. It is estimated these funds will pay for the processing of 4 elk. The Rotarians will negotiate the price and arrange for the processing of the elk at a local locker plant and deliver the packaged meat to the St John's Food Pantry. It is anticipated the elk will be harvested in November-December 2015 and the meat will be delivered December 2015-January 2016.
