Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Ada County, Idaho

Total Budget: $3,125

Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Economic and community development

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Minnie Benton Memorial Elementary School Resource and General Reading Book Project

This project will support the purchase and donation of resource and general reading books for Whittier Elementary School in the Eagle-Garden City Rotary Club impact area. Boise is a US Federal refugee resettlement area. Many refugee families are economically, culturally and linguistically challenged. Elementary schools in low income areas of Ada County attract these families based on their affordability. 69% of the students at Whittier live in households with income under the federal poverty level. Additionally, school districts operate under limited budgets particularly for supplemental books and reading materials. To help Whittier students we propose funding supplemental resource and general reading books oriented to 1st - 6th grade kids at Whittier Elementary School.

Your grant application for the Miss Minnie book project has received preliminary approval with a reduced DDF contribution of $1,875. If you wish to go forward with your project, please change the financing to reflect this, also adjusting cash contributions or the total. To do this, cancel the signature process (description tab – admin.) and adjust your financing to reflect the changes, and then send again for signatures. YOU MUST DO THIS BY AUG. 30, 2015, OR WE WILL ASSUME YOU NO LONGER WANT THIS GRANT, and the money will be given to another club. Your revised project will be reviewed by the district for final approval. If you have questions or need help, call Cari Kaster at (208) 539-1519 or Marianne Barker (208) 308-5617.

Please explain why you reduced your club contribution to this project from $1250 to $625. When you were asked to revise your financing to reflect the amount of DDF you were awarded, it was assumed by the District that the club contribution would remain the same or that you would increase it in order to continue with the full proposal. Lowering the amount of club contribution subjects your project to reexamination and may result in a downward adjustment to the DDF award.

Status is as follows: 75% of the books (and money) have been purchased, gone through the Boise School district's registration process, and are being delivered to Whittier Elementary School at noon on Friday, March 18 by Gene and Tonja. A list of desired children's books was provided to us by the Principal and Librarian of Whittier, and that is what we are working from. We expect this project to be completed by May 15.
