Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Caldwell, Idaho

Total Budget: $3,400

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Provide 1,400 second graders in the Caldwell School District and the surrounding districts with their own chapter book.

Reading is fundamental; So the 1980s slogan went. The Caldwell Rotary firmly supports the local school district and their goal helping each student attain grade-level literacy. For more than 10 years now, the Caldwell Rotary has distributed more than 1,400 age appropriate books to students. Each book has a Rotary decal with a place for the student to put their own name in the book. The project funds would be used to purchase the books and the labels for the books.

Many of the children in our area are from underprivileged homes and this may be the very first book that they may have as their very own. Young children need to become excited about reading at an early age to motivate them to want to read more which improves their chances to succeed in learning and in school. We have teachers

individually select a book for each student in their classes with their interests in mind so the book is meaningful and exciting to them. This project takes place in November, skips December, and finishes up in February. Many fellow Rotarian club members sign

up to help distribute the books and receive attendance "make-ups" for helping. This whole process strengthens our club's service commitment through purpose, gets Rotary's name out there, and promotes literacy through the joy of reading at an early age. It also

highlight Rotary in our community.

Your grant application for the 2nd grade book program has received preliminary approval with a reduced DDF contribution of $1,275. If you wish to go forward with your project, please change the financing to reflect this, also adjusting cash contributions or the total. To do this, cancel the signature process (description tab – admin.) and adjust your financing to reflect the changes, and then send again for signatures. YOU MUST DO THIS BY AUG. 30, 2015, OR WE WILL ASSUME YOU NO LONGER WANT THIS GRANT, and the money will be given to another club. Your revised project will be reviewed by the district for final approval. If you have questions or need help, call Cari Kaster at (208) 539-1519 or Marianne Barker (208) 308-5617.
