Homeless children of San Diego and Orange County do not have food on the weekends, the protein we will be providing will be added to other foods, placed in backpacks, and distributed to homeless children through their elementary school. There are approximately 16,000 homeless students within the two counties who will be served with food for their weekend, each
week throughout the school year. Hungry children have difficulty paying attention in school and studying, have long-term physical, emotional and behavioral issues, social difficulties, mood swings, show aggression, truancy, become bullies, and are hyperactive. Approximately 50% of our club members will shop and purchase proteins and peanut butter during the school year (September thru June) to be added to the weekend food backpacks distributed to the children each week.
Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)
The administrator of "Got Your Back" informed us the best pricing for the items we were going to purchase could be obtained through vendor they regularly use. We agreed to have a $3,000 purchase made on our behalf. Instead of having our club members do the shopping, we arranged a work day at the warehouse after the purchase was made.
Because the backpacks are stuffed on Tuesday nights, it became difficult to get enough club members available for that portion of the project. Instead, our club members, and a few club guests, unpackaged cases of food items into individual cans and packets and stocked the shelves so that the team of volunteers could easily place them into the backpacks. We also had to weigh the cases of food for government reporting by the organization.
