Rotary club of Mumbai South (RCMS) is one of the foremost clubs in District 3140 actively involved in service to humanity through its diverse vocational and community service projects. The club was chartered in 1971 .

JAWAHAR :Jawhar Taluka (District) is 180 KM from Mumbai, the financial capital of India. It consists of 272 hamlets called PADA's.The population in PADA varies from 100 to 600 nos. 90% of the population belongs to Schedule Tribes and caste. 80% of the population live below the poverty line. Geographical area is 1.5 lakhs acres. Adivasi's are extremely poor, ignorant, uneducated and do not adopt family planning methods. They lack basic amenities such as health, education, irrigation and employment.

A pressing problem

Wells, which are the main source of drinking water, are constructed by the Government and are located in the valley.

As per the socio norms, the task of fetching water down under the valley to the respective huts on hillock is assigned to the women, children in the house.(Site pHOTOGRAPHS ATTACHED ) The children and Adivasi women of these villages have to walk a distance of more than 1,000 m in hilly terrain with pots of water on their head in extreme climatic conditions.

The children of the house are forced to do house work, main being fetching water instead of sending them to school and educating them.

The wells are unprotected resulting in scarcity of potable drinking water, it has resulted in water borne diseases such as Diarrhea, Cholera, Dysentery, Typhoid, etc. The symptoms include abdominal discomfort, fatigue, weight loss, bloating, fever, loss of appetite, cramps, nausea, vomiting, muscle aches, rash or itchy skin, jaundice, nose bleed, etc.

The cost of project to supply water to 10 villages is approximately Rs. 8.6 million = US$126470 ) including annual maintenance cost to keep the plants running. Time period is 1 year. This incLudes submersible pump, solar energy,HDPE pipes ,fittings ,jointings, tank, plumbing fittings ,stand post ,labour for trenching,,jointings . A

local NGO will partner in executing the project .

We are looking to associate clubs/corporates to help us in the funding of project. It will help in elevating the drinking water supply to villagers and help a population to improve their living conditions, educating children.

The project will benefit a population of 3836.The women and children will be free from drudgery of lifting water on heads and devote time in education, better health free from diseases.

The club has already done three such projects in Jawhar district which are running successful since last half decade. Annual maintenance contracts are awarded, the villagers are well trained in maintenance of the the equipments

.A five member committee is formed in each village to look after the functioning the water supply .Each house contributes a minimum Rs 50 per month towards maintenance of the system. Some villages contribute more than the minimum amount.Maintenance within the guarantee period is carried by the OEM. Small repairs are carried out by the village teams.Major repairs are taken care of by experts from nearby city of PUNE . The Rotarians visit the village intervals keep track of the projects .
