Proposal Form

This is follow up project to GG25002, Nkondo Adopt a Village, which included a water component that also covers micro-irrigation. The Nkondo community is basically a rural agriculture community, and the objective of the new project is to expand the scope of irrigation during the dry season, thus maximising returns from high yield crops by marketing outside peak seasons: the challenge of most agricultural communities in Uganda is that they all plant at the same time during the rains; harvest at the same time, and sell when prices are at their lowest. This project will help in the establishment of several small scale valley dams (to be excavated by the community) set up with suitable plastic sheeting underlayers to ensure water retention. A related component will dwell on product storage so that selling during peak production seasons is avoided.

Contractor identified; Local government discussed and approved the project and agreed to take up ownership once done; Land owners where the dams are to be located have all formally written granting land. Challenge is that it is the middle of heavy rains, and that is not suitable for excavation. We holding on for the rains to tail off.

Per Tusu: Four of the valley dams were completed, and the current Governor visited them. He was impressed by the scope and possibilities. The 5th was half done before the extended rains we have had for almost 7 months came in. We are now in a dry season, and the last dam should be completed soon.
