Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Maternal and child health
This global grant (GG1634083) will fund 3 Vocational Training Teams (VTT) to travel to Grigore Alexandescu Hospital (GAH) in Bucharest to provide lifesaving heart surgery to approx. 30 Romanian children. Each VTT team will also provide training to the Romanian pediatric cardiac team in the newly built Heart Center. Additionally, the cost of surgery and accommodations will be funded for 10 Romanian children with heart disease who will travel to Israel and be operated at Wolfson Medical Center in Tel Aviv. Lastly, the grant will fund a cardiology clinic at the new GAH Heart Center to diagnose Romanian children with heart disease and prioritize them on a National waiting list for treatment.
Approximately 1,000 children are born each year in Romania with heart disease. Currently, over 20,000 children are in need of lifesaving open-heart surgery. At least 1,500 of these children are very ill and require immediate care. Each year, 5,000 children die due to lack of proper diagnosis and treatment.
This global grant will be the first of many to support the development of a sustainable pediatric cardiac program at GAH to address the tremendous need, work down the very lengthy waiting list and to provide the newly formed pediatric cardiac team with essential training, equipment, supplies and medications in an effort to empower them to treat children with heart disease in their own country over time.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.

I have updated the budget to represent what was approved. I lumped the non-Rotarian contributions to be matched by TRF into a single contribution via La Jolla Sunrise.

The first ever training mission to Grigore Alexandrescu Hospital in Bucharest, Romania was recently held. This visit included a visiting team from Albany Medical Center and the International Children's Heart Foundation . Thanks also to Professor Dan Enescu from Grigore Alexandrescu for his leadership, and the new Romanian pediatric cardiac team who were ready and anxious to learn and help their children. Also on hand were 2 Rotarians from our host club (Radu Popescu and Victor Martin) whose tireless efforts arranged all the logistics for this mission. 8 children and their families were now given the Gift of Life.
