Each year every third grader in the Chicago Heights and Park Forest elementary schools receives their own dictionary as part of this project. Each dictionary receives a label on the inside pocket of the book listing our club name and the 4-Way test. In total 15 schools that include 35 classrooms totaling close 750 students. Eights Rotarians will participate in the project in different capacities. First, Rotarians will help with the delivery of all of the boxes of dictionaries at a fellow Rotarians house. Second, each classroom will be contacted and books will be divided for the amount of students in each classroom. Finally, each student will receive a dictionary.
With our club residing in a low-income area (Chicago Heights & Park Forest), the importance of literacy is stressed. Sadly, for many of our students this is their very first book that they own. Most of them are excited to receive their books. It is the hope these students will get the value out of the dictionary with all of the useful information it provides.
