Project Description

Country: Mexico

Location: Tijuana

Total Budget: $7,400

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Provide a computer lab to a preselected junior high school in a low-income community in Tijuana.

Club Rotario Tijuana Agua Caliente requested our support for this project. They have identified junior high schools in low-income communities that lack computer equipment. The computer lab will provide technology related instruction to prepare students to be successful now and in the future. The school was preselected based on the following requirements: secure classroom with locks and window and door security bars, classroom used exclusively for computer classes, furniture, air conditioning, proper electrical wire installation to support the equipment, school's commitment to maintain, repair, and replace equipment.

The computer lab will have 40 computers ($150 per computer for a total cost of $6,000) and 1 laser printer ($400). The cost for materials and installation is $1,000 bringing the total cost of the project to $7,400. La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club has secured $4,400 for this project. If matched by a $3,000 District Grant we could provide the $7,400 to fund this project.

The Agua Caliente Club has been installing computer labs over the past five years. To date they have installed 9 computer labs and there is one lab that is ready for installation. Each lab benefits approximately 550 students per year. The Agua Caliente Club has committed to follow-up with each school and provide replacement equipment at a cost below market value. They report that the project has been a huge success.
