Background
Kyenyange village is located in Kikuuba LC 1, Kezimbira Parish, Mugalama County in Kibaale district 210kms from Kampala in the western part of Uganda. Mugalama County has a population of 28,900 with 14,100 male and 14,800 female with approximately 5,867 households. Children (aged below 18 years) constitute about 55% of the total population.
The main source of water for domestic use and drinking is a man-made well at the bottom of the hill about 500m from the trading center of Kyenyange. There is another source of water at Kakiiza, also a few meters from the trading centre. These open water sources are unprotected streams flowing from the hills and don't dry during heavy dry spells. The residents highlighted challenges faced while fetching water from these open wells. They noted that
it was risky for children due to possibility of drowning as the well surroundings are slippery;
The wells are also used by animals;
access to the well is by temporary timber which can curve in anytime.
There was contamination of the water from other running water which may have excrete from humans and animals.
Emergence of a number of diseases in the area including; bilharzia, skin infections, stomach pains, typhoid, dysentery, and malaria/fever.
The sanitary situation, in the village was equally very poor. The percentage of households without a toilet was as high as 40%.
At the nearby village school, Kikuuba primary school the latrines for the students are in a dire state and some are about to fall in. The toilets were built in 1990. The doors to the boys toilets are rotten and no longer useable. Some of the boys toilets are also condemned. As a result, the boys and girls now share the same toilets. We also understood that the teachers also share the same toilets. The school has over 416 enrolled learners of whom 210 are female and 206 are male
Proposed interventions
Our Rotary Club will partner with Kibaale District Local Government to extend piped water to the communities in wider Kikuuba LC 1 and Kezimbira Parish, in general.
a. Kibaale Local Government will operate and maintain the water supply system; and the residents will pay for the used water for sustainability.
b. We will conduct sanitation and hygiene education for the communities in Kikuuba
c. We will carry out training of the community, especially women in the production of reusable sanitary pads as a way of economic empowerment.
RCKSI will also partner with Kikuuba Primary School leadership and the local community of the school to undertake the following;
a. The boys' toilets at Kikuuba Primary school will be reconstructed
b. The Kikuuba Primary School gardens will be used for afforestation and planting of various tree species; and
c. The girls at Kikuuba Primary School will, initially be supported with reusable sanitary pads with the aim that, in the long run the sanitary pads made by the women in the community can be sold to the school girls at a small fee
Proposed Partnerships
the beneficiary community in Kikuuba who will among others, donate land for installation of the project facilities/infrastructure, offer space for grant trainings, and provide security for the installed facilities.

Project Objectives
a. To improve availability of and access to clean and safe water by residents of Kezimbira Parish which include Kikuuba LC I and Kyenyange Village
b. To improve the economic status of women through training in the production of reusable sanitary pads
c. To improve sanitation and hygiene through construction of new boys' latrines at Kikuuba Primary school
d. To provide associated sanitary facilities for the girls at Kikuuba Primary School
e. To improve sanitation and hygiene knowledge of the community members
f. Through afforestation we will help clean the air, protect the environment and provide habitat to terrestrial biodiversity.

a. Reduced cost of clean water i.e. a jerrycan of water from UGX 500 to UGX 200

Project Beneficiaries
The project will directly benefit over 1,000 community members who will have access to clean and safe water; and through improved sanitation and hygiene, and over 300 women through training in the production of reusable sanitary pads as a way of economic empowerment.
The project will also benefit learners and teachers at Kikuuba Primary school. There are 416 pupils and over 15 staff.
Proposed activities
a. Installation of piped water system incl. water pipeline, distribution network, pump house, water storage tank and stand, and public taps
b. Sanitation and hygiene education for the community.
c. Training the women in the production of reusable sanitary pads as a way of economic empowerment
d. Construction of 8-stance boys pit latrines complete with handwashing stations
e. Provision of sanitary pads to the girls of Kikuuba Primary school
f. Planting of trees in the Kikuuba school garden and Compound
