In an effort to collaboratively work with Mat-Su Sertoma, the Wasilla Noon Rotary would like to partner with them to purchase a Sound Proof Hearing Booth that will be incorporated within their newly acquired mobile unit. With a total budget of $8000, the Wasilla Rotary Club will provide $3000 with a matching grant of $3000 and the Sertoma Club will cover the remaining $2000. This will ensure accurate base line hearing screenings for those in question of hearing loss, or obstruction. Approximately 1,500 new residents, including families, will be positively affected by this project. Mat-Su Sertoma provides free regular screenings to members of the Mat-Su Borough once a month for four (4) hours August through May at a temporary location in the Mat-Su. For the past seven years, Mat-Su Sertoma has seen and average of 84 individuals per year with a grand total of 864 community members. Mat-Su Sertoma partners with Schools, offices and the community to encouraged members to attend local health fairs to receive their free hearing screening. With our help, they will be able to take the sound proof booth to many outlying locations to reach many more individuals and families. Rotarians will be trained on calibrated baseline hearing screening equipment. They will help with pre-screening residents, and routinely provide data entry of all outcomes. Partnering with Mat-Su Sertoma to provide regular baseline hearing screenings during health fairs, the Alaska State Fair, as well as to non-profits with at-risk adults and children in various outlying locations will provide a wider reach within the Mat-Su community (reaching from Talkeetna to the Butte, up toward the Summit area, as well as Meadow Lakes, Big Lake, Houston, and all areas in-between. Because of these efforts, the Mat-Su community will become better educated on hearing health issue, such as over-exposure, and work related hearing loss, to name a few. In order to measure the outcome of these mobile visits, a system will be incorporated into the mobile unit, specialized training for Rotarians will be made available, enabling the certified individuals to input data for tracking measurable outcomes annually. The Mat-Su Sertoma Club will, with the help of our grant, purchase the mobile hearing booth which will be shipped to Wasilla at the end of 2016. Once the booth has been delivered, our Rotarians will be trained on the equipment and the mobile booth will be operational by March 2017.
