Project Description

Country: Haiti

Location: Mirebalais, Haiti

Total Budget: $2,470

Area of Focus: Economic and community development

Activity Type: Food/Agriculture: General

Summary: Improve irrigation abilities and plant 800 mango trees for Vision Farm, a project of Global Vision Citadelle Ministries to help feed the children at All God's Children Orphanage located outside Mirebalais, Haiti.

All God's Children Orphanage is supported by Global Vision Citadelle Ministries (GVCM) and presently has 110 children living at the facility. Food to feed the children and the staff has been a huge expense for years. GVCM started Vision Farm 2 years ago to provide fruit and vegetables for the children and staff of the orphanage to help them defray food costs.

Currently there are seven men employed to work the farm using Haitian sustainable permaculture techniques. Providing these seven families with income was a side benefit of the farm. The unemployment in Haiti is currently 80% unemployed or underemployed.

We will be purchasing a diesel pump similar to the one shown in the attachment to provide irrigation water from existing water sources to various locations on the 30 acre farm. The orphanage currently works the farm but does not have irrigation capability during the dry seasons. This project will allow them to provide the water during the dry season to maintain their mango trees and other farm efforts for continued production of food. The pump will need to be purchased in Port Au Prince with cash so we are unable to provide an exact cost at this time. The same pump was purchased in December 2015 at a cost of $1,870 in Port Au Prince, so that is our price estimate. If the pump is purchased in America then we have to pay for delivery and that is time and cost prohibitive. The balance of the grant will be used to purchase as many mango trees at $1.50 each as we can.

There is currently farming during the rainy season. As soon as we are able to purchase these items and have them installed, it will allow for additional and continued production on the farm property year round.

We have two current Gooding Rotarians and their families that are personally engaged in this project. Rotarian Andy Morris is a local pastor and has been working on the farming project since it began. He has traveled several times over the past four years to work on this project. Chris Comstock's family has been twice to work on the project.

I know you've only started this application, but here're a couple of things that need to be addressed as you proceed: Grants in tier 3 (total project amount > $2471) must have a detailed spending plan included in the project description. In the financing, DDF can account for no more than 50% of the total project. What will be the active Rotarian participation in this current project?

Couple of things for your report: 1. Please upload a time-appropriate currency converter for verification of the cost in U.S. dollars of the supplies shown on the receipt.2. Upload of copy of the club's cancelled check to the person or organization who implemented the project 3. Provide an affadavit from the implementers that the trees and pump were purchased as described and the project implemented as explained in the grant application 4. If possible, upload some photos of the installed pump and of the planted mango trees.
