Summary: Pioneer home upgrades for residents & on-site preschool in Ketchikan, Alaska, USA
First City Rotary is seeking funds to make improvements at the local Pioneer Home. We anticipate that it may be a two-fold project. First, there is an inside space where the carpet is beginning to wrinkle and fray causing potential tripping hazards for the residents. We wish to help in funding and installing updated carpet in this area. We have club members with the ability to help with installation and other club members who will assist in the removal of the old carpet. The second portion of this project is to make updates to the on-site pre-school playground area. There is a fraying rope fence that needs to be replaced for safety and general landscaping work (mostly clearing out overgrowth). Club members will work on improvements to the rope fence and landscaping work. The project should be complete by year-end 2019.

This project is 99% complete. It took 38 unique volunteers over 200 volunteer hours across a 6-week period to finish this project. The damaged flooring and warped adhesive layers were removed, and new, easy-to-maintain carpet tiles were installed in the facility. This work took a combination of hand tools, mechanical scrapers, and a large amount of "elbow grease" to properly replace the floors. One of our members, Bruce King, runs a construction company and oversaw the project work. Bruce was the most significant contributor to the project, making it both safe and successful. The residents and facility users of the Ketchikan Pioneer Home now have safe flooring in all of their common areas.
