Areas of Focus: Water and sanitation, Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy

Summary: South African School facility renovations and supplies

This project is being undertaken in partnership with the Edenvale Rotary Club in Johannesburg, South Africa. The Busy Bee Primary school serves approximately 120 students ranging in age from 5 to 12, and is located about 40 km from Johannesburg. The school receives nominal funding from the government and is reliant upon the $45 per month tuition from students, but does not turn way those unable to pay. The school is on the site of a former farm, and although there are existing bathroom facilities they are in poor repair. The ceiling leaks, there are no working light fixtures, some toilet stalls lack doors, and there is no hot water. The proposal covers the cost of the following repairs and upgrades:

• Repair the ceiling in both the boys' and girls' bathrooms and install lighting

• Install hot water taps for each sink basin; install a hot water heater and shower units

• Tile the walls and floor.

• Provide doors on the toilet stalls

• Install toilet paper holders, soaps dispensers, and hand dryers or towel rollers.

The estimates have been secured from contractors end the project is ready to begin when funding becomes available. In addition to overseeing the prject, the members of the Edenvale Rotary club will provide hygiene training for the the students, who can then take their training back to their communities.

In addition to these repairs and upgrades, in fall of 2013 we will be purchasing and assembling kits of school supplies for the 120 students in the school. This will be a hands-on project here in District 5320. These will be shipped to Johannesburg and distributed to the Busy Bee students in June of 2014 by Rotarian(s) from District 5320.

We will publicize the project by mounting a Rotary plaque at the site upon completion of the project, and by providing local media outlets with a short press release.

Note: The current exchange rate is $1 USD to 9.9 ZAR.
