The Lawa Prasad Orphanage is located in a semi-rural area near Kathmandu.It is home to 21 children from the lowly Dalit caste, a deprived community group commonly known as "untouchables." The kids are from remote areas of eastern Nepal and are victims of the civil war that raged from 1996 to 2006.
At present the kitchen is largely open to the elements and comprises a single rice cooker,a couple of ancient frying pans, and a few bowls and plates. The project will install a water purifying system and a sanitary and efficient kitchen. It will provide potable water; food storage and preparation equipment and utensils; and enough bowls and plates for all the children. With this kitchen the orphanage will be able to prepare nutritional meals that will enhance the orphans' general health and their ability to advance in school.
RAW officially adopted Lawa Prasad in the fall of 2017 after several club members visited the orphanage. The club has provided food during Covid lockdowns, installed windows and doors, and provided beds, bedding, and other items. This project will continue the club's improvement of the children's living conditions and health.
The project will be directly overseen by Sudip Koirala and Deepak Achhami who have long supervised our club's school construction program in rural Nepal and maintenance of our three orphanages in Kathmandu. The project will be completed within the 2022-2023 Rotary year.
