Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Juneau, Alaska

Total Budget: $10,000

Area of Focus: Economic and community development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Provide repairs/improvements needed for the city to allow occupancy of Haven House, a transitional home for women coming out of prison.

Haven House has been organized as a non-profit in Juneau, Alaska to provide women leaving prison a safe and supportive living environment. The goal of the organization is to enable these women to cultivate an alternative to the lifestyle that led to incarceration through the development of and/or enhancing positive life skills, and building self-esteem. Haven House will provide referrals and offer services, such as counseling, substance abuse treatment, employment coaching, literacy, and life skills training.

A home has been identified that will accommodate up to 9 women but the City and Borough of Juneau inspectors have identified a number of deficiencies in the home that need to be addressed before occupancy will be allowed. These deficiencies include the following:

1. Improved guard rails at stairway openings.

2. Improvements to the rear deck to allow for snow loads.

3. Changes to the electrical in the garage to meet code.

4. Installation of GFCI outlets throughout the house as required by code.

5. Installation of fire extinguisher in kitchen area and ground level.

6. Additional improvements that may be needed.

This project will correct all of the deficiencies and improvements mentioned above to the extent that funding is available.

Haven House is planning to have permits from the city in the late June timeframe. Once permits have been obtained, repairs will need to be made to the structure before residents are allowed to move in. Assuming permits are obtained in June; repairs will begin in July and should be completed by the end of August.

The funds will be used for materials, supplies, and labor needed to make the repairs. The Club has a number of members that are in the engineering and construction industry that may be able to help with this project. In addition, club members may also be able to contribute to some aspects of the construction, given appropriate supervision.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

The Juneau Rotary Club is fortunate to have members with vocations in the construction industry; our members that are architects and contractors will oversee and direct work of our members with the majority of repairs needed at Haven House. More complicated or specialized repairs will be contracted out, if required
