NEEDS IDENTIFIED AND HOW WILL MEET
Last year Orange Sunrise Rotary mentored students enrolled in the Collaborative Technology Program (CTP) at El Modena High School. CTP is a California Partnership Academy that targets at-risk students and focuses on student success. Academy guidelines require connecting students with local business/community mentors. The Mentor Meals project fulfills their grant requirement and enriches the lives of 75 students.
We learned a lot in our pilot year and have redesigned our grant to better meet the needs of the students. The four Mentor Meals where the regular Rotary club meetings moved to the high school were well received and will continue. Rotarians will interact with 45 high school juniors at dinner programs that will consist of a light meal, a focus topic (Community Service, Ethics, Soft-skills in the Workplace, etc), and related table topics to generate dialogue and communication.
Additional components of Mentor Meals that will continue:
1. Collaboration with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce(HCC) - They will fund the Explorer Career Club, offer $500 in scholarship funds and recruit 6 to 8 additional members.
2. Student Leadership Team - Rotarians will work closely with the team in the planning, organization and operation of the meals.
3. Senior Projects - Rotarians will serve on judging panels for 30 senior student projects.
New components of the Mentor Meals grant will include:
1. Mentor Training - Ms.Greenley (lead CTP teacher) will conduct a mentor training prior to mentor/student interaction. We learned mentors need both more background information on at-risk students and an overview of the goals of CTP. This training will be held at a regular Rotary meeting and will also include the HCC mentors.
2. Advisory Board - The club will assist Ms. Greenley in establishing a CTP Advisory Board.
3. Senior Planning Dinner - Rotarians will meet again with the students that they mentored last year. The additional, separate dinner will focus on discussing the student's post secondary education/career plans and their senior project ideas.
4.Project Debriefing - Ms. Greenely will attend a regular Rotary meeting next spring, along with the HCC mentors, for a project debriefing.
