Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Tanzania

Location: Mwanga Kilimanjaro Region

Total Budget: $240,773

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

Extreme scarcity of Water has been the primary community need, requested; but sanitation and hygiene are also very bad in this rural village. Kiruru village is both one of the most needy in Mwanga district, seeming well organized and is very eager to partner with Rotary.

_Water_: Rotary, with partner NGOs and the Mwanga District, will provide a new borehole, tank, water purification and distribution system, with tapstands and animal trough. _Sanitation_: we will provide the materials, knowhow and supervision for each home to construct a latrine, of an appropriate design for this area and culture, then keep it in good condition, and use it daily.

_Sanitation & Hygiene_: the Community members and students in schools will be trained in (1) CLTS, as needed, (2) how to manage and sustain their water system, (3) how to use sanitary practices to keep their water supply and use safe, (4) handwashing, (5) basic health, personal hygiene practices, with a view toward improving public health in this village.

_M&E_: The project will include a significant and ongoing monitoring program, during implementation, at conclusion, and for 5 years after the project is finished.

Overall project timeline is expected to be from Fall 2015 through Spring or Summer 2017.

_Financial Sustainability_: The water price per 20L for families from this community-owned system has been verified as affordable. There will be sufficient income from water users to operate and maintain the water system, and make future improvements as the community decides.

_Budget_: Approx $200-250,000 USD will be total project costs; we are finalizing budget now.

_Involvement_: Rotarians are actively involved both in Mwanga Rotary club and Seaside Rotary club: community discussions, assessment and involvement; collaboration with other partners; budget, fundraising, documentation, planning, measurement and of course sustainability of this enterprise by the community.

_Photos_: You can see photos of meetings and conditions in the village, in these two links to dropbox: 1) http://bit.ly/1UwWLPm for PPP Team visit to Kirur and 2) http://bit.ly/1Orwaw7 recent visit by sanitation NGO experts to Kiruru.

Please ask any questions ... we would very much appreciate the opportunity to partner with your Rotary Club. We will keep you informed, with access to documents and photos in Dropbox. There will be opportunity to travel to Tanzania; in addition to visit to the project, we hope it will include hands-on activities and visit to tourist sites including safari in national parks of Ngorongo Crater and the plains of Serengetti.

The Project Management Team includes Rotarians in both Mwanga & Seaside clubs (Host & International partner clubs), as well as officers from Mwanga District and leaders from the NGOs who we collaborate with. We are presently in the process of selecting an NGO for sanitation work, then finalizing the budget, developing measures and sustainability, and involving the community in the beginning choices, their responsibilities and our overall timeline. This project has been nearly 2 years in the making, and we are carefully assembling the bets resources to apply to meet this village’s needs with sustainable solutions. We are in full fundraising mode now, looking for partner clubs and districts - so please inquire if you have questions, and make a pledge to this wonderful project!

Dear partner Rotarians,

In Austria, Canada, USA and Tanzania,

We can now tell you this global grant - for toilets, borehole with safe water, hygiene training, school WaSH training and more - has been APPROVED by TRF!

It received the highest scrutiny, because of two AoFocus, poverty and difficulty of working in this rural area. The collaboration has taken time and care to assemble.

And unique to this project, TRF has approved the use of a revolving loan fund so that even the poorest people in Kiruru will be able to purchase toilets for their families, and pay their "solidarity loan" over time.

PDG Denny Jones will contact you soon, to arrange your club's contribution. We will send a more detailed message about the planning visit, and approval. Thanks for your patience and

Update:

- Water Mission Tanzania staff have arrived to meet village leaders, conduct a field survey to set locations of the water system, and discuss the location for a borehole. They have put their upcoming tasks into our consolidated schedule.

- EEPCO have also put their upcoming tasks into our consolidated schedule, submitted their first invoice, and will be ready to start their work soon.

- most clubs have delivered their funds for this project - by check or wire transfer to our Global Grant Bank account, or (to get PHF points) to PDG Denny by check, so he can send them together. Some outside the USA have sent funds directly to TRF (in Europe & Canada).

Thank you!

Stew

All funds from clubs have now been received, proof of deposit in the form of bank statements has been sent to the TRF staff person who distributes GG funds, and he has been requested to deliver the GG funds to our special GG Kiruru WaSH project bank account in Seaside.

Meanwhile, implementation has commenced on both water & sanitation:

Water - meetings, borehole site analysis, MOU prepared for landowner and Village to maintain access and the borehole.

Sanitation, EEPCO staff started training artisans ... you can see first photos, here: http://bit.ly/2jXnqIT

Implementation has begun!

Dear fellow Rotarians and friends,

The automatic reminder you just received is almost timely, as there are a number of developments these last few months. Three of these are in progress right now.

I believe we will have a good club update report for you within a month.

Prof Mario Rehulka, from Austria and a lead Rtn for fundraising in Europe on this project, came to Oregon Coast recently to visit Stew Martin. And now he is in Mwanga, visiting Rotarians there and the project site, village, district staff etc.

Thank you Prof. Mario for your keen interest in helping the poor water-starved people of Kiruru, Mwanga, Tanzania!

This is so much appreciated!

Hello all,

The water project has gone well. Water Mission Tanzania is providing updated reports & data.

We had challenges with 1st group of homeowners on toilet construction, receipts & completion. Most are over, but we remain concerned whether this community is committed, and skeptical as to whether that aspect should continue.

We are updating accounting w/ receipts & bank statements, collecting documents, & preparing 2nd annual report to TRF.

Hopefully be ready in next couple of weeks.

16-Jun-20

by Stewart Martin

Dear partners in this great Kiruru WaSH project,

Brief summary:

1. Household toilet program was difficult to get compliance, timely construction and records; so it was stopped.

2. Instead we got approval from TRF to focus on school toilets. First Mramba primary, these school toilets are nearly complete, including disabled access, menstrual hygiene, and new SaTo pans

3. And we have enough money left to also do school toilets at Lwami primary school, where excavation and construction is starting.

Yours in Rotary service,

Rotarians Stew. wotj Seiya, Mfanga, Lucy, Shaun, Denny and Bob

10-Oct-20

by Stewart Martin

Status update: According to Rtn Mfanga Tegemea of RC Mwanga, Toilet block and handwashing construction is now completed in one of the two schools, the other about 80% completed. Slowed down due to product availability and construction interruptions. Aiming toward project completion before December!

18-May-21

by Stewart Martin

Dear Rotary friends,

A brief update here - more will come in a week or so.

RC Mwanga Rotarian Mfanga is working to get the toilets at two schools completed. The original contractor has not completed fully; one is nearly finished, the other maybe 80% finished. They are using advocacy on 1st, plus getting 2nd contractor involved.

The annual report is delayed, but Seiya & Mfanga are now on-task gathering receipts, updating spreadsheet, and writing the implementation steps for this last 15 months. Will be to me soon, for review, then on to TRF and your club as soon as it is ready.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Stew M, RC Seaside

25-Dec-22

by Stewart Martin

This project is nearly complete. More details & reports soon. Here is a summary:

1. the water system (borehole, chlorination, solar energy, distribution to community taps and animal drinking troughs was excellent. Met international and TZ standards. The Mwanga District and engineers were impressed, and it has contributed to a new standard for them.

2. Household sanitation effort was replaced by school sanitation, TRF approved.

3. Contractor defaulted, absconded - then foreman stepped forward.

4. Annual report filed with TRF was approved. Grant funds are all used.

5. Final bath taps and water delivery so they can e used are being done - then final report can be filed.

Thank you all _so very much_ for your support, patience, understanding. Kiruru has dramatically changed. Stew Martin

2-Oct-23

by Stewart Martin

Update: the last step in procedure for the two schools with new toilets provided by Rotary is to obtain water from the community. One has received rainwater and the toilets are functioning as well as the hand wash basins. The second is to be connected to the main pipeline coming from the Dam, which is an ongoing project for years. Mfanga is told that pipe will connect soon. We are seeking verification from RUWASA. Stew and Mfanga.
