This project provides clean, disease-free drinking water to 250 households in Fijian villages on the island of Vanua Levu. The project provides individual households within a village the capability (both in equipment & training) to filter their own water from village existing sources to achieve over 99.9% removal of all pathogens. It also provides filters to schools and clinics to ensure villagers have comprehensive access to disease-free water. An MOU with the Fiji Ministry of Health is in place to assure long term sustainability.

Most villages in Fiji have reliable water supply and distribution systems. However, while these water supply systems provide ample quantities of water, the water is not treated for pathogen removal in any manner. Therefore there is no assurance that the water is safe for human consumption. The Fiji Ministry of Health as well as the WHO (World Health Org) has documented widespread cases of acute and chronic illnesses in the village populations from consumption of water containing pathogens ranging from various bacteria such as fecal coliform, protozoa, or cysts like E. coli, Giaradia, Vibrio cholerae and Salmonella typhi, and viruses. There are cases of severe illnesses such as typhoid and leptospirosis which are known to be transmitted via water contact. However, there are also more common illnesses such as chronic dysentery and diarrhea that are widespread in the population and particularly responsible for absenteeism in school children. It is these conditions that can be effectively reduced, if not completely eliminated, if the water for human consumption (drinking & cooking) could be treated by "Utra Filtration" to remove these pathogens.

This project has three specific components. The first phase is to source and distribute small household filtration units to all households within selected villages. The second phase is to provide training to all members of each household on the proper use and care of the filtration units to ensure the units will meet their design life of 10 years or more. Finally, the third phase of the project seeks to establish a partnership between the Rotary Club of Savusavu and local health officials to provide for follow up visits and training to insure sustainability of the project and maximum use of filters provided.

The filtration equipment consists of small hollow tube filters certified to remove all pathogens to a level of 0.1 microns which account for a 99.999999% remove rate. These small filters have a capacity of over 1 ltr/min. The project will provide a Safe Water System consisting of a dirty water bucket, a pre filter, filter, clean water bucket and stand. Host club members will oversee training and verify the Safe Water System is set up properly in each household.

Prior to disbursement of the funds, Rotary International requested we delete the international travel from the project budget and address some questions. We are revising the project plan accordingly which includes a change in the number of filters, villages, shipping, project schedule and US/Fiji funds split. This adjustment should be complete in the next few weeks.

7 years after the completion of this project we travelled to Fiji and met with some of the beneficiaries. It turns out that the water filters are still being used by the communities. So this project proved out to be very sustainable. Congratulations to all.
