Project Description

Country: USA

Location: El Centro, CA Site 2

Total Budget: $7,000

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Economic and community development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Playground equipment for children residing at WomanHaven's Domestic Violence Shelter Site 2

The need: Playground equipment is needed to create a safe and healthy kid-friendly fun zone for the children residing at the domestic violence shelter in El Centro run by WomanHaven. The traumatic effects of domestic violence on women have been widely documented. But the fate of a second set of victims, their children, is often overlooked. When violence in the home forces children to flee with their mothers to an emergency shelter, they arrive scared and in a very fragile emotional state. The emotional stress of witnessing violence and having their lives uprooted can harm the development of their brains and impair cognitive growth in children. Creating a kid-friendly fun zone will give the children a healthy and safe place to play and the chance to start to feel normal again. And, it will also serve an important therapeutic purpose as play has been proven to be beneficial in therapy as part of the healing process.

Meeting the Need: Rotary Club of El Centro will purchase $7,000 of the necessary playground equipment to transform the back yard into a kid-friendly fun zone. Playground equipment to include a play structure with a slide, swings, jungle gym; and if the budget permits may also include a basketball hoop, ping-pong table, and/or bikes.

Timeline: We have a club commitment of $3,500 upon approval of the District Grant; and this project can be completed within 90 days of funding.

Use of Funds: The $7,000 budget will be expended exclusively on playground equipment. No funds will be spent on administrative or any other costs.

Club member involvement: All club members will be invited and encouraged to participate and to bring friends and family to work on the project.
