Pure Water & Infrastructure

This project is to provide a Safe Drinking Water through Solar and infrastructure improvement to Junior and High Ashram School. Two existing schools have recently been combined to form the new Ashram School. The school is for deaf, dumb and mentally challenged children and will have 450 residential children, teaching staff, and support members. The existing borehole water supply system is unreliable and sometimes contaminated.

The school is operated by Bhatkya Vimukta Jati Shikshan Sanstha (BVJSS) which operates several schools for nomadic and poor children in the area of Pune, India, including deaf, dumb, and mentally challenged. BVJSS provides basic facilities such as food, shelter, medical support and education. The emphasis is on a sense of goodness, brotherhood and kindness amongst the children so that they develop as good human beings and citizens of our country.

The project includes:

•Solar reverse osmosis equipment

•Benches, tables, chairs, cupboards, etc., for the combined school

•5 KVA Generator to be used with existing electrical system

•Submersible pump for borehole well

•Water tank for storage of water.

Project schedule

Solar reverse osmosis system installation: 4 - 6 weeks

Installation of water tank: 8 - 12 weeks

Total project completion: 15 - 18 weeks

Project Benefits

•Better health of Children, Staff and Workers due to provision of Purified water

•Better education by providing basic infrastructure such as benches, table, chairs

•Better atmosphere for education

•Cost Saving approx. 560 USD per year in medical expenses

The solar water generator will be maintained by the vendor for the first year, and train BVJSS personnel during that time. After one year, routine cleaning and maintenance will be done by BVJSS personnel.

The water tank will be cleaned every three months by BVJSS or Ashram School personnel

Host Partner

• Maintain financial control, including issuing purchase orders and paying invoices.

•Participate in technical and commercial negotiations for the solar water supply system and other purchased items.

•Supervise installation of water tank by Rotary Club civil engineers.

•Visit project site every 3 - 6 months to assure that maintenance schedules are being followed.

Other Host Club Participation

During the project, other Rotarians and Ann’s can participate in the voluntary activities such as :

•Training to students of 8th to 10th standard for English speaking

•Initiating Tree-Plantation activity at the Bakori Phata High School

•Teaching the students values and other subjects based on their interests

•Initiating Collection Drive for clothes, Routine Medicines, Shoes, Educational Material, Food Grains, Pulses and other day routine necessities in their societies and areas which will help the school in kind

International Club Participation

Four Rotary Clubs in District 5340 are participating in this project. The Primary Club, La Mesa Rotary, will keep in close contact with Pune Hadapsar Club on the progress of the project and the financial status. The Club will keep members and others informed about the project through our newsletter, "The Tattler", and by email to the other participating clubs and the District. The project will be presented at appropriate times at District meetings.
