   Ecuador - Parroquia Malimpia

Safe Water for Schools, M-3

$22,960

Parroquia Malimpia is located in north, central Ecuador in a region of tropical forest and farms. While water is plentiful, the groundwater is contaminated in many areas. The water conditions in the schools and health clinics is disastrous. Water-borne diseases directly affect student health, learning and economic livelihood.

This project expands and builds upon the success of two earlier Rotary projects to provide water treatment to poor, rural, small, isolated schools and health clinics.

The schools in this third project are Serqafino Quintero (160 students), Leonidas Proano (80), 19 de Octubre (30), 2 de Julio (45) and Guillermo Rio Andrade (250) for a total of 565 children. The first two are high schools and the last three are primary schools. The health centers are called Zapallo, La T, and Ronca Tigrillo.

The Quito Colonial Rotary Club proposes to install new water treatment systems at each school and clinic. Working with an engineer they have identified a system that will serve each school. Club members previously met with community leaders and school representatives to develop an implementation plan. Community leaders will sign an agreement describing the acquisition of the system and the community’s assumption of the obligations to operate the water systems, perform on-going system maintenance and repair, and to purchase and utilize the required treatment chemicals. The plan provides for the of training community members about the system operation, maintenance and repair. The plan projects that water systems can be installed thirty days after receipt of funds.

Budget

The total project cost is $22,960, or about $2,500 per facility.

Funds will be used to acquire the following for each school:

• Diaphragm dosage dispenser for chemicals, 110 volts

• Tank for hypo calcium chloride solution, 120 volts

• Filter (sand and activated carbon) and valve system for back wash

• Three sacks of sand

• 25 kilograms of activated carbon

• Water level control for inside of well to protect water pump (schools and clinics already have water pumps)
