Construction of all 6 kiosks has been completed. Non profit organizations are being created in each village to operate their kiosk. As each non profit is formed, the water company will then make their final connection and start delivery of water. Three of the non profits have been formed and water service in those three villages should begin shortly. The other three non profits are currently being formed.

The Kenya Water Kiosk Project is proceeding toward completion and we currently have a representative from one of our California, U.S. partners on the ground in Kenya helping to move the project forward . There was one major unanticipated set-back that has caused a significant delay. Briefly, after construction and installation by MAWASCO of the kiosks and pipelines commenced, the water supplier, Kilifi-Mariakani Water District, installed some new distribution pumps in the district serving the subject kiosks. Unknown to MAWASCO this increased the water pressure in the main lines of the district. After construction was completed and four of the kiosks were connected to the supply, leakage in the supply pipes for three of the kiosks was detected. Unfortunately, it took the contractor some months to figure out what was going on and to make a decision to remedy the problem by installing pressure reducing valves. The first pressure reducing valve is now being installed at Mkondoni Village and with satisfactory operational testing, the same valve will be installed on the remaining five kiosks. It is hoped that this will be a satisfactory remedy and that the other four kiosks will then begin operations again. One kiosk in Malanga Village has not experienced any leakage and is operating very successfully. The sixth kiosk, in Kakoneni Village location, is still working on forming a satisfactory organizational group to operate the kiosk. The other five locations will hopefully all be operational within the next one to two months, based on the time required to order, receive and install the pressure valves. We see no reason at this time why the grant project should not reach completion within three to six months maximum.

Six water kiosks in the villages of Viriko, Mkondoni, Malanga, Girimacha, Kakoneni, and Lango Baya have been completed and are operating. Each village has a population of 1,500 to 3,500 residents who now have access to clean water. Thanks to Rotary Clubs of Malindi, Kenya, Ueberlingen, Germany, and Fallbrook Village, USA, District 5340 and Rotary Foundation for making this project a success. A final report has been submitted to TRF.
