   Honduras - El Marillal

Water for Adopt a Village

$39,624

This grant will address problems of water and sanitation. It is being done under the Adopt A Village program of the Inter Country Committee between D-5240 and Honduras. The project has two components. First, it will provide a deep well (up to 300 feet) and a pump. Second, it will provide 50 composting latrines and hand washing stations with antibacterial soap. It is expected that this grant will be completed within a period of one year.

Honduras is the second poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. The poorest state or department in Honduras is Choluteca. El Marillal is a village of approximately 900 people who live in extreme poverty in Choluteca. The average daily income per household is $1 to $2 per day. Because the village well is now dry and cannot meet the needs of the population, villagers purchase water from vending trucks. It is expected that the new well will be able to sustain the village for the next 20 years.

The composting latrines and hand washing stations address the issue of sanitation. Currently there are few latrines in El Marillal. The new latrines are designed so that safe, disease-free compost will be produced from human waste. The compost will be used in future community gardens. Hand washing stations with antibacterial soap will minimize the likelihood of fecal contamination and will reduce infection/disease.

The village of El Marillal already has an 18,000 gallon holding tank that was provided by the government of Honduras in the first quarter of 2009. The homes and school are already equipped with sand filters and there is conduit to each home and the school that terminates in a stand spigot. Therefore, these items are not included in the grant.

Background: In June 2008 an Inter Country Committee (ICC) agreement was signed by D-5240 and the country of Honduras. The agreement pledged that members of the ICC from D-5240 and Honduras would work for a period of at least 3 years to address the issue of poverty in Honduras. The water and sanitation project in El Marillal is a major undertaking of the ICC.

In September 2008 delegates to the ICC from the RC Simi Sunrise and the RC Westlake Village Sunrise went to Honduras to begin understanding the needs of the country. The ICC formulated a strategic plan to “Adopt a Village” and work with that village for a period of up to 6 years to help the villagers raise themselves out of extreme poverty. In January 2009 the same delegates returned to Honduras and selected the village of El Marillal to be a demonstration site for the “Adopt a Village” program. At that time we learned from the Mayor and his leadership committee that their most pressing need was water and sanitation. This grant addresses that need.
