   Tanzania - Ukerewe

Mwansa Hospital

$14,596

Phases 1 and 2 of a Project to help reduce child mortality on an island (Ukerewe) in South Lake Victoria. This adopts RI President D K Lee’s aims. Population of 350,000 served by 1 hospital (Bukumbi) in Nansio, the main town on Ukerewe, 23 dispensaries and 3 clinics. The medical services are run-down, inadequately supplied and filthy. Equipment is defunct. Staffing is insufficient and demoralized. They desperately need help and plead for Rotarians to deliver because other people have failed to do so. 1 in 16 babies die, amongst the highest rate in Africa.

The project has five phases, the second of which is the subject of this application: i.e.

2. Upgrade the operating theatre, labour ward, and post-natal ward. This involves: raising funds to acquire second-hand or new equipment; storage of goods pending shipment; shipping out and installing of equipment; and training staff. Timescale: September/October 2009.
