D-1612    Indonesia - Bima Village Water Well $24,857 The project will focus on providing clean water for the Tolonggeru Village to the west of Bima. The population of Tolonggeru Village is approximately 800 people, with an elevation of 1000 meters above sea level. The village suffers from drought nearly year-round. The land is stony, as the area was influenced by the high intensity explosion of the Tambora volcano, hundreds of years ago. The primary occupation is farming, due to the limited economic opportunities in the area. Villagers also milk horses, and weave traditional clothes. The most urgent problem in the area is the lack of clean water. The current water source for the village is a spring 10 kilometers away. A water pipe was installed from the spring to concrete storage tanks built just outside the village about 15 years ago, but the system no longer functions. The pipe runs along the surface of the ground, and has developed numerous breaks over the years; additionally, there has been the problem of people tapping into the pipe along the way to the village. The result is that almost no water reaches the storage tanks. The villagers are forced to walk the 10 kilometers to the spring every day just to get a few liters of drinking water. Many of them suffer from skin diseases due to lack of water for hygiene, and others are also impacted due to the unhealthy and unclean environment. In light of these conditions, we are planning to: • Drill a well up to 80 meters deep • Install an above-ground pump and build a housing for the pump • Repair the existing water tank, and also increase the tank capacity. The well had to go deeper than planned - 90m instead of 80m.
