   Uganda - Kyasira, Nalugula

Kyasira Village Water Wells

$11,266

There are about 1500 residents in Kyasira, Nalugala and the people trek over 5 kilometers to fetch unsafe water at the Northern end of the Victoria Lake. Traditionally water is fetched by girls and women and hence are exposed to diseases and are often subjected to abuse by migrant laborers as they trek back. In addition, children loose their productive school time while fetching water. Also sewage disposal is very poor and when it rains it ends up in the lake, exposing people to poor hygiene and sanitation. It is proposed to provide easy access to safe and clean water by sinking one new boreholes deep enough to remain productive even in long dry spells and improve sanitation to the village residents by purchasing and installing a double compartment eco-friendly latrines in the area for use of the village residents. The above should greatly benefit and promote healthy living in the village community.

The drilling of the borehole and construction of the latrines will take maximum 90 days so we can call it 3 months and the Rotary Club of Kampala North plans to form or convert the current village working committee into an RCC to maintain the boreholes and latrines. Maintenance of boreholes and latrines for the local community will involve;

• Ensuring the serving is done on time as recommended by the vendor – i.e. inviting the vendor in time

• Ensuring that the latrines are used as directed through regular checks

• Ensuring the latrines are drained in time as recommended by the vendor

• Ensure that the money collected in the community for servicing the borehole and latrines is secure and paid.

The training will include the use and maintenance of the boreholes and latrines will be done by the technical people of the contractor. The Rotary Club of Kampala North members/committee will ensure that the training happens and manage its quality and delivery based on the “best practice for training”; e.g. they will need to provide some written documents to leave with the community; indicate when follow training will be done, the indicators to review to ensure that the training was effective, etc…

The suppliers are DESCO ENGINEERING SERVICES – Offices at Radiant House, Plot 2 Luwum Street; P. O. Box 7854, Kampala; Tel: +256 772 471 125

No, nothing will be imported but we used US$ in the proposal because this is the currency we receive the funds in and we need to lock in the amounts to mitigate against the foreign exchange rate movement. But the quotes from the vendor are in Ugx. At a rate of about 2,050.
