Background
The Jjanyi community on the outskirts of Kampala City does not have access to piped water. A gravity water scheme was established in the 1990s to provide safe drinking water to over 1000 residents – however the main water cachement area is not protected, and this has resulted in heavy silting that has blocked the pipes. The community, which includes a primary school and teachers' residences, does not benefit as it should from the project.
Goals and Methodology
The overall goal of the project is to restore the water gravity scheme to its full functionality, so that the community can benefit from this source of clean running water. Protecting the main cachement area and establishing a means of filtering the water before it is piped and stored will greatly reduce the possibility of blockage of pipes, and contamination of the storage tanks. The following activities are proposed under the project:
1. Establishing filtration at the main water cachement area.
2. De-silting the water pipes, and cleaning out the storage tanks.
3. Training local residents to perform regular maintenance.
4. Supporting the project by participating in maintenance activities.
Project Governance
A "Water Committee" already exists to manage the gravity water scheme, and is responsible for the maintenance of the scheme. However the resources available to the committee are not sufficient to fund the major design changes that are being proposed under this project. It is proposed that this committee continues to serve as the "project owner".
Community Involvement
Community participation enhances the sense of project ownership. The proposed project includes training of identified resources within the community, who will then perform regular maintenance. It is also proposed that members of the community shall participate in the de-silting the water pipes and cleaning out the storage tanks. |
