   Uganda - Bushenyi

Training - Rural Credit Unions

$40,225

The primary beneficiary organization is the Uganda Rural Enterprise Cooperative Union (URECU). This is a national umbrella organization that brings together 70 rural credit unions (also known as village banks). These 70 village banks are organized under ten clusters in ten regions of Uganda and each region has an average of seven village banks.

The grant will provide funds for basic micro credit management training of seven key leaders from each village bank. These leaders will be trained in groups of fifty for two days at each of the ten cluster centers. This will result in the training of 490 leaders for a total of 20 training days.

The training areas to be covered include credit union law, loan management, enterprise identification, and bookkeeping and accounting for village banks. The grant will be used to pay return transport, feeding and accommodation for the trainees who will travel an average of 70 miles to the training venues as well as honoraria for trainers that will work with Rotarians. The grant will also provide one vehicle for the on-going monitoring of the 70 village banks as well as stationery as required for effective record keeping.
